Stump grinding is the job we're known for. The rest of the list is what a yard usually needs once the stump is gone, so you're not lining up a second contractor to finish it.
Ground 4 to 6 inches below the surface for a lawn, deeper if you're setting a post or pouring a slab over the spot. The grinder is 29 inches wide, so it reaches backyards a tow-behind can't.
Trees that need to come down, and the cleanup after ones that already have. Have the stump ground in the same visit and it's one trip instead of two.
The step most people skip after a stump. Chips out, topsoil in, graded flat, sod down, so the spot disappears instead of settling into a dip.
Standing water after a Mid-South rain usually has a fixable cause: a low spot, a downspout with nowhere to go, clay that won't take water. French drains, catch basins, regrading.
Sprinkler systems that put water on the grass and not the driveway. If we're grinding near existing heads, point them out; 811 doesn't mark them.
Low-voltage lights for paths, trees, and the house, so the yard is still usable when it's dark by five in December.

Straight answers before you call
How much does stump grinding cost?
It depends on the stump, and the honest way to price one is to see it. What moves the number: the width at the ground (not at the cut, which is always smaller), how deep you need it, surface roots you want gone, and whether the grinder can drive to it or has to be walked in. Across the trade, extra stumps on the same trip run less than the first one, since the setup is already done. Text a photo with something in it for scale and you'll get a free estimate.
How deep do you grind?
The Bandit we run cuts up to 12 inches below grade. For grass, 4 to 6 inches is plenty. If you're setting a fence post, planting a new tree in the same hole, or pouring a slab over the spot, say so and it goes deeper. The roots out past the stump stay in the ground and break down over a few years, which is normal and doesn't hurt anything.
What happens to the wood chips?
A stump turns into more chips than you'd expect, two or three times the size of the stump itself. The usual move is to rake them back into the hole and mound them a little, since they settle as they break down. If you want grass there this season, the chips need to come out and topsoil goes in; that's the sod prep on our list. Hauling the chips off is an option, and it changes the price.
Will the stump grow back?
Most won't. A few trees are stubborn about it: Bradford pear, sweetgum, crepe myrtle, mimosa, hackberry, and elm will throw sprouts from roots left in the ground. Grinding takes out the crown of the stump, which is where most of that regrowth starts. Sprouts that show up later can be mowed or cut and give up after a season or two.
What should I do before you come?
Two things. First, tell us where your private lines run: irrigation, dog-fence wire, landscape lighting, a septic line, the downspout drain. Tennessee 811 marks gas, electric, water, and fiber for free with three working days' notice, but it won't mark anything past your meter; those are yours to point out. Second, clear the path. The grinder is 29 inches wide and runs on tracks, so a 32-inch gate works, but a trampoline or a firewood pile in the way doesn't.
Can I just rent a grinder?
Under about 8 inches across, sure. A rental unit and a Saturday will handle it. Over that, rental machines bog down and you spend the day feeding them. A big oak or pecan stump with surface roots is a different job entirely, and it's what a tracked grinder is built for. Text a photo and ask; if it's a rental job, we'll say so.
